Paste a text in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French or German. See the HSK, JLPT or CEFR level a learner needs to read it, and the level of every word.
Each word of the text is matched against Miniglot’s word lists: HSK 1 to 6 for Chinese, JLPT N5 to N1 for Japanese, CEFR A1 to C1 for Spanish, French and German. Chinese and Japanese are split into words first, as they are written without spaces; in the other languages a conjugated or plural form counts as its word, so “mangeons” is “manger”.
For each level, the tool counts the share of the text’s words a learner of that level and the ones before it would know. Reading research puts comfortable reading at about 95 to 98% of words known: below that, the text is a puzzle rather than a read. The level shown is the first one to reach 95% (a little less for Spanish and German, whose lists are drawn from written texts and leave out some everyday words).
Numbers and names are not counted. A word in no list is shown as such: it may be rare, a name, or a word the lists leave out.
Paste it above with Chinese selected. The tool splits it into words, finds each word’s HSK level and gives the first level at which a learner knows 95% of the text’s words.
About 95% to read with some effort, 98% to read comfortably without a dictionary. Below 90%, most learners lose the thread.
Yes, free and without sign-up. The text you paste is measured and not kept.
Miniglot teaches every word of these lists, level by level, with spaced repetition, and writes stories from the words you already know.

Miniglot writes stories and books from the words you know, so every text is just hard enough. Ten minutes a day.
